Goals and Objectives

The goal of this project is to sustain and strengthen the capacity of CHaMP, which is already integrated with PECARN, to conduct high-quality multi-center pediatric prehospital research that closes priority knowledge gaps. Through multi-center, rigorous, clinical research we will advance equitable pediatric emergency care and support the development and dissemination of evidence-based guidelines for EDs and EMS.

To accomplish this goal, we will complete the following objectives:

•  Conduct high-priority, high-impact, equitable EMSC research using rigorous study designs and methodologies via a network of prehospital EMS agencies.
•  Equitably engage Affiliate and Emerging Investigators to ensure that PECARN has a growing and diverse bench of researchers working to use the PECARN infrastructure to improve pediatric emergency care in the hospital and prehospital setting by expanding the evidence base.
•  Establish and maintain a data infrastructure within PECARN to ensure that data are available for research project development, analysis, and knowledge translation activities.
•  Fully integrate CHaMP into the PECARN infrastructure to ensure that CHaMP is an active and valued member of PECARN.

Enhance EMSC-related research and its subsequent impact by developing and conducting research and disseminating research findings.

To accomplish this goal, we will complete the following objectives:

• Develop a research infrastructure;
• Develop a research agenda;
• Develop a method to develop projects;
• Develop a dissemination plan;
• Foster collaboration between academic and treatment communities.

Goals and Objectives

• Institute a fully operational nodal infrastructure that upholds the requirements of and contributes to the successes of PECARN.
• Formalize a research and development process that ensures new science and knowledge translation align with priorities identified by HRSA and other stakeholders.
• Maximize participation in clinical trials, observational studies and implementation projects while maintaining a robust QA system.
• Transfer network findings by disseminating results through publications and presentations to the scientific community and by providing leadership to PECARN in “knowledge translation” research.

• To develop and obtain extramural grant funding for high-priority hospital and prehospital-based observational studies and clinical trials relevant to EMSC
• To successfully participate in all PECARN research, including the enrollment of a large volume of children into appropriate studies
• To broadly disseminate PECARN research findings
• To perform knowledge translation research in order to effectively translate EMSC-related evidence into clinical practice
• To forge collaborations with a broad coalition of stakeholders in EMSC in order to enhance PECARN’s research efforts

• Implement a rigorous scientific process to continue generating high-quality, high-priority nodal research proposals with high likelihood of extramural funding.
• Generate and facilitate outstanding prehospital research by strengthening our EMS infrastructure.
• Translate evidence into EMSC practice through the performance of knowledge translation research and the dissemination of PECARN research findings to the stakeholder community.
• Conduct PECARN research studies rigorously.
• Develop successful pediatric emergency care (PEC) researchers through strong local, national and international mentorship.
• Reduce racial and ethnic disparities in care by conducting research and improving the diversity of our research workforce.

Goals and Objectives

• Organizational Infrastructure: rapidly build and maintain a strong, high functioning PECARN node, capable of performing excellent clinical research and contributing to all network activities.
• Contribute to EMSC Research: conduct high quality, high impact pediatric emergency medicine research, across the spectrum of EMSC projects and settings.
• Develop New PECARN Research Projects: across EMSC research of high impact/low incidence conditions, incorporating the EMSA into all of the node’s research processes, and especially building on the SPARC PIs’ strengths and research expertise – underrepresented research topics, e.g. sickle cell disease (Emory), behavioral health (UCSF) and substance use (Brown) disorders.
• PECARN Registry and Data Linkage: contribute to PECARN’s current and future electronic data registry and linkage projects.
• Knowledge Translation: SPARC will be a leader in dissemination and knowledge transfer, leveraging existing, successful methods and relationships.
• Advance Early Stage Investigators: SPARC will foster the development of early stage investigators, both within the node and the PECARN network.

Goals and Objectives

• STELAR will establish a well-planned and highly productive infrastructure to facilitate implementation of high quality observational and interventional studies throughout the continuum of emergency care for children.
• STELAR will participate in ongoing PECARN studies, propose and apply for funding for new multicenter ED and EMS research projects, use rigorous study design and methodology, and enroll geographically, racially, ethnically and economically diverse participants.
• STELAR will disseminate research findings and develop, implement, and test effective mechanisms for knowledge translation into clinical practice, with inclusion of patient-centered outcomes.
• STELAR will develop early stage research investigators and expand research engagement opportunities to faculty, nurses, and EMS providers across all nodal sites.

Goals and Objectives

The EDC, based at the University of Utah School of Medicine, provides a central repository for data generated by each of the PECARN research nodes and their hospital affiliates. The EDC also works with each of the RNC Principal Investigators to implement PECARN-wide standards for data collection and analysis in order to ensure uniformity and quality of the data and monitor the safety and timely progress of PECARN studies.
